In Asheville, ride the French Broad River Greenway and enjoy New Belgium Brewing Company's outdoor food truck venue, Ace and Eagle Sports Club and ride along the French Broad River Trail.

Our easiest, family-friendly, all-ages experience.  This premier e-bike excursion seamlessly bridges the vibrant culture of Downtown Brevard’s Social District with the rugged gateway of the Pisgah National Forest. Your MEET-UP and journey begins at the beautifully renovated, historical Brevard Railroad Depot (390 Railroad Avenue), a local treasure featuring elegant landscaping, picnic areas, and convenient bike storage bordering the peaceful King Creek. After a brief safety orientation and training with the Greenway eBike Rentals team in the public parking area, you’ll be ready to explore the best of Transylvania County on two wheels.

As you set off, the trail unfolds into a curated tour of Brevard’s most iconic districts. You’ll have direct access to downtown's boutique shopping, the Brevard Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, and the historic Transylvania County Courthouse. Ride by old-time hardware stores, bakeries and stop in and say "hi" to the oldest independent Real Estate Firm in the City, Sandra Purcell & Associates - take a gander at what's for sale and let Jeremy know you dropped by.  Then proceed away from town center to the yellow pole on your right, 3 blocks ahead. The route then leads you through the Lumberyard District, a hub of local creativity home to HomeSlyce Pizza, Noblebrau Brewing, the specialized Area 22 Guitars, and the renowned live music and dining at 185 King Street. Whether you’re hunting for antiques or soaking in the atmosphere of the classic metal and salvage yards, this stretch offers a unique window into the town’s industrial-meets-artisan spirit.

The adventure continues as the greenway meanders toward the world-famous Oskar Blues Brewery and its lively Food Truck Park—an ideal spot for outdoor dining and live performances. From there, pedal through the expansive County Recreation Park before reaching the riverside charm of Ecusta Brewing. While the dedicated e-bike and e-scooter path concludes at Lowe’s, the journey for those continuing to the forest edge culminates at the Davidson River Campground Bridge. You can park and walk over the bridge to enjoy Dolly's Ice Cream at the Gateway of the Pisgah National Forest, or enjoy Hawg Wild Barbeque and plan your Fly Fishing excursion at Davidson River Outfitters. At nearly 5 miles one-way (9.6 miles round trip), this route is a perfect 2-hour escape—or a full afternoon of exploration if you stop to savor the local brews, music, and mountain hospitality.

A Note on E-Bike Operation

To ensure a safe and successful ride, please be aware that these e-bikes are designed as pedal-assist vehicles. The motor is intended to amplify your own pedaling power rather than replace it.

Important: The bike cannot carry a rider on throttle power alone, especially during any steep sections of any trail. To engage the motor and maintain momentum, you must continue to pedal. Relying solely on the throttle can lead to motor overheating or rapid battery depletion, potentially leaving you without assistance for the return leg of your journey.

Your meet-up point will be at the Brevard Railroad Depot, 390 Railroad Avenue, Brevard, NC 28712.

Warning: Cell phone service on US Forest Service Trails can be spotty, sometimes non-existant.  Make sure you bring water and proper clothing.  You can also ask us about a guided tour to support your scenic journey on Road 47B.

Embark on an unforgettable e-bike journey through the heart of the Pisgah National Forest, starting from the scenic Johns Rock parking area. This high-elevation ride transitions from the deep, shaded canopy of the forest floor into a breathtaking ascent toward Forest Service Road 475B. As you climb, the terrain reveals the raw, geological majesty of the Appalachian range, where massive boulders and sheer cliffs line your path. During the winter and early spring, the thinning foliage offers a rare, unobstructed view of the legendary Looking Glass Rock, affectionately known as "Little Yosemite" for its striking granite face and soaring presence.

As the trail meanders along the serene, crystal-clear waters of the mountain streams, you’ll experience a sensory immersion in one of the most biodiverse regions in the country. The gentle soundtrack of rushing water follows you as the road winds through lush tunnels of rhododendron and past hidden waterfalls that sparkle just off the shoulder. This stretch of the ride highlights the peaceful, rhythmic beauty of the forest, offering plenty of vantage points to pause and take in the panoramic mountain ranges that stretch toward the horizon in shades of deep blue and emerald green.

The climax of your adventure reaches the intersection of Highway 276, where you can catch your breath and appreciate the sheer scale of the landscape before turning back for the return descent. On the ride back to Johns Rock, the perspective shifts, offering fresh angles of the cliffs and valleys you previously climbed. Whether you are an avid cyclist or a leisure rider looking for a deep-woods escape, this out-and-back route provides a perfect balance of exhilarating climbs, scenic water features, and the kind of "Big Sky" vistas that make Western North Carolina a world-class riding destination.

Recommended For

This route is ideally suited for riders with average to above-average physical fitness. While the forest service roads provide a wider path than a traditional single-track trail, the elevation gain toward Highway 276 involves sustained climbing that requires steady effort. This experience is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy a mix of moderate physical challenge and the immersive, quiet solitude of the deep Pisgah backcountry.

For a ride that perfectly balances paved ease with the rugged beauty of the high country, the journey along Forest Service Road 475 is a local favorite. Starting from the Johns Rock parking area, the route begins on a smoothly winding paved road that dances through the forest canopy. You’ll experience gentle elevation changes as you ride past mossy rock ledges and parallel the crystal-clear currents of the Davidson River. This section is all about the "flow"—wide curves and scenic views that let you soak in the deep greens of the Pisgah without the stress of technical terrain.

The scenery shifts beautifully as you reach the Cove Creek Group Campsite, where the pavement transitions into a well-maintained gravel road. Crossing the bridge, you leave the modern world behind and enter the heart of the wild. The air becomes noticeably cooler and the forest more intimate as you approach the turnaround point at Daniel Ridge Falls (also known as Tom’s Spring Falls). This 150-foot cascade is a true hidden gem; the sight of the water plunging over the tiered granite cliff is the perfect reward for your journey and a stunning backdrop for a midway rest.

After taking in the falls, the return trip offers a relaxing, mostly downhill-sloping glide back toward the fish hatchery. Because this is an out-and-back route, you get a second chance to spot the hidden boulders and smaller cascades you might have missed on the way up. It’s a quintessential Pisgah experience: the sound of the stream, the smell of the damp forest, and the sheer majesty of one of the area’s most impressive waterfalls, all accessible in one manageable, high-reward ride.

For Brevard and Ecusta Greenway Trails, you'll be pedaling on level surfaces.  If you are riding a US Forest Service trail, you will climbing, although eBike assisted you will use physical effort.  You will then descend which causes wind, therefore layering is essential for comfort and safety - especially in early Spring such as March, April and early May.

  • Early Spring Base Layer: Wear a moisture-wicking synthetic or Merino wool top. Avoid cotton, as it traps sweat and will make you feel chilled during the descent or if you stop to view "Little Yosemite."

  • Mid-Layer: A lightweight fleece or a long-sleeve cycling jersey. This traps heat while allowing moisture to escape during your climb.

  • Outer Shell: A packable, windproof and water-resistant jacket. Even on a sunny day, the wind at higher elevations near Highway 276 can be sharp.

  • Early Spring Gloves & Headgear: Full-fingered cycling gloves are recommended for better grip and warmth. A thin "buff" or neck gaiter can be easily stowed but provides immense comfort if the temperature drops.

Essential Gear

  • Hydration: Bring at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water. While the road follows a stream, you should never drink unfiltered forest water.

  • Navigation: Cell service is unreliable in this corridor. Download an offline map (like Avenza or Trailforks) before you leave the Johns Rock parking lot.

  • Emergency Kit: A basic first-aid kit, a multi-tool for the bike, and a high-decibel whistle.
